Dining with the Past

I held your gaze dangerously long
maybe to see if you’d fall in love
with me again.
We were parallel rainforest rivers
and I cherished that you trusted me
enough to break a pattern to intersect.
It was the intention of it //
I forced us to begin with and expected
to naturally flow back into you,
clumsily, as nature wills.
But you held my gaze back and maybe we
both naturally wanted to force it again.
