The Looking Hands

Oh I am so overtaken lately.
Well I hardly ever believed in God
but I did know that I was being punished.
To be queer is to feel shame in
your own searching for pride.
I have not found it I have not found it.

Something else I look for
before pride, before the outward
is the small piece of sun, perhaps of       / lightning,
that takes up the heart in the head of
you.
No. No.
I certainly have to find it in you.
After within, we have to flame together.

  1. Sometimes the simplest words can have the deepest impact, and there was something about the following lines which really hit me:

‘To be queer is to feel shame in
    your own searching for pride.’

I think it’s the way it creates an image of a vicious circle which makes it so effective. I appreciate the thought and feeling behind this poem, and the italicising of ‘you’ and ‘we’ in the final two lines was a nice touch to highlight the speaker’s hope and determination.
